tara-mack

Tara Mack has sung in classical choirs for many years and is currently a soprano in the London Oriana Choir. In 2019, inspired by the Oriana’s five-year project to promote women composers, she began writing choral music of her own.

Since then she has been busy composing, studying, and encouraging other choir members to compose. She has been performed and commissioned in both the US and the UK. In 2023 she was selected as a composition fellow for the Choral Arts Initiative’s PREMIERE|Project Festival, and she has been commissioned to write for the New York City Master Chorale, the International Choral Competition Ave Verum in Austria and the Pembroke College Chapel Choir under the direction of Anna Lapwood. One of her pieces has been published in Graphite Publishing’s Compose Like a Girl series.

Encouraged by her example, other members of the Oriana have also begun writing choral music. Mack organizes composition workshops for the choir taught by leading composers such as Bob Chilcott, Cecilia McDowall, Jocelyn Hagen, Richard Allain, and Kerry Andrew.

By day Mack works in organizations committed to social justice. As the first Director of the Education for Liberation Network, she nurtured its growth into a national network that connected hundreds of teachers, activists, young people and parents reimagining education as a tool for the liberation of marginalized communities. She is currently Director of Programmes at Pembroke House, a community center in South London. She lives in East London with her partner and two children.

She enjoys setting texts that reflect her political values, her African American culture, and her experiences as a mother.
