molly-joyce

The work of composer Molly Joyce has been described as “emotionally appealing twenty-first century style” (Fanfare Magazine), and “vibrant, inventive music that communicates straight from the heart” (Prufrock’s Dilemma). Her music has been performed by notable ensembles including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra conducted by Francesco Lecce-Chong, and the New Juilliard, Decoda, and Contemporaneous ensembles. Most recently, she has also been venturing into electro-acoustic music and performing on her vintage Magnus electric chord organ.

In the 2013-14 season, she had several premieres including those by the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and violinist Adrianna Mateo. The 2014-15 season has many new projects including premieres by the New World Symphony (in collaboration with DJ Panic Bomber), the New York Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall, the New York Virtuoso Singers at Merkin Hall, and Milwaukee’s Present Music. She will also serve as composer-in-residence for the Maryland Wind Festival, and has received a Jerome Fund for New Music Grant from the American Composers Forum to write a new work for Vicky Chow.

An advocate for incorporating music composition into the general education curriculum, Joyce has served as a mentor for the Music-COMP Online Mentoring Program, a non-profit organization which supports music composition for students, and as a Teaching Artist Intern for the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composer BRIDGE Program. At Juilliard she was an Ear Training Teaching Fellow, a Morse and Rothschild Educational Outreach Teaching Fellow, and served as a Combining Literacy Instruction with Musical Beginnings Teacher. As a Gluck Community Service Fellow, she presented interactive performances at many health care facilities throughout New York City.

Also an active participant in other aspects of the music industry, she is currently the Digital Content Manager for New Amsterdam Presents/Records and serves as an assistant to singer/songwriter Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Darcy James Argue, Sean Hickey, and Sarah Kirkland Snider. She has previously worked as the Digital Content Manager for Roomful of Teeth and has also assisted composers William Brittelle, Judd Greenstein, Ted Hearne, Steven Mackey, and Missy Mazzoli.

Joyce recently received a Bachelor of Music degree with Scholastic Distinction from The Juilliard School studying with Samuel Adler. She is currently studying in The Netherlands at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Martijn Padding and Guus Janssen, as a recipient of the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund Grant.
