Translation: We shall have beds full of subtle perfumes, Divans as deep as graves, and on the shelves Will be strange flowers that blossomed for us Under more beautiful heavens. Using their dying flames, Our two hearts will be two large torches Which will reflect their two lights In our two souls, those twin mirrors. On an evening made of rose and of mystical blue A single flash will pass between us Like a long sob, charged with farewells; And later an Angel, setting the doors ajar, Faithful and joyous, will come to revive The tarnished mirrors and the extinguished flames Programming AidsPerformance Difficulty: difficultSeasonal Usage: WinterSpringDescriptive Terms: deathloveFrenchromanticAllow Excerpts: Composition is a single movementComposer’s Notes: Commissioned by Herriman High School in Utah, the ensemble wanted a lush and romantic setting of this poem by Charles Baudelaire. A part of his larger collection of poems "Les Fleurs Du Mal", this particular poem was most notably used by Debussy. A nod to the impressionist composer, this setting includes several chromatic and octatonic passages, leaning towards a dream state. Culminating in a diatonic climax at the end, the singers will fall in love with this popular French text.
