All is shadow And ghosted trees: Once dancing in warm air, They stand bare against the winter wind. And circling every branch, As cold as fire, Lays a crystal glove: A mirror for the blood-red holly And the frozen silver of the stars. Programming AidsPerformance Difficulty: difficultSeasonal Usage: WinterDescriptive Terms: winternaturesolemnAllow Excerpts: Composition is a single movementComposer’s Notes: Commissioned by the Wellspring Ensemble (Seattle, WA), the conductor wanted a scene which depicted the isolation that winter can bring with a solo cello instrument sounding like a "lone wolf wandering the wilderness". Robert Bode came on board as the poet and lyricist to create a scene of desolate beauty, the kind that can be found in his now hometown of Columbus, OH in the winter. The cellist plays an important role in this performance, and should play the part sweetly and confidently.
