Yes, there were time I felt so lonely Without a single dollar to my name; It seemed the whole world was against me, And any body there before me I would blame. And there were moments I felt so burdened And wanted total absolution for my soul, I didn’t know who to turn to Or where my desperation would have me go. I’ve been tempted, and I have fallen I’ve been needy, and I’ve been lost; I’ve felt the pain of separation, And of evil ways I know the cost. But I’ve heard the voice of reason, To ease my troubles, I know it’s best To grant forgiveness when I’ve been slighted And ask for peace and understanding for the rest. I’ve heard the glory of undisturbed night; I’ve seen the darkness in the brightest light; I know the power of forgiveness, Oh, forgiveness that will set you free! The introduction should be almost a solemn meditation, while the rest of the work (from measure 17 to the end) ought to be sung with a jubilant, spontaneous-feeling and energy. This latter section may be performed unaccompanied, or with an ad lib piano, bass and drum set accompaniment in a traditional gospel style and one can also choose to hand-clap on beats 1 and 3.
