PROJECT : ENCORE

The music of Caroline Mallonee (b. 1975, Baltimore, MD) has been programmed at venues in New York City including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Merkin Hall, Bargemusic, Town Hall, and Roulette, as well as further afield at the Long Leaf Opera Festival (NC), Carlsbad Music Festival (CA), Bennington Chamber Music Conference (VT), Cambridge Music Festival (UK), Tokyo Opera City (Japan), the Corcoran Gallery (Washington, DC), Turner Ballroom (Milwaukee, WI) and Jordan Hall (Boston, MA).

Her choral music is performed widely. She has been commissioned by the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, the Cecilia Chorus of New York City, Buffalo Girlchoir, and A Prairie Home Companion, among others. First rising to national prominence at 14 with The Carolers At My Door, Mallonee has won the ASCAP/Morton Gould Young Composers Award, Yale Glee Club’s Emerging Composers Competition, Ft. Myers Mastersingers Prize, and the Institute for Choral Creativity Competition. In her position as Composer-not-in-Residence for the San Francisco Choral Artists, she has been commissioned to write three new choral works this season. For many of the pieces in her catalog, Mallonee wrote the words as well as the music. Her choral music is available from Boosey & Hawkes and Swirly Music.

She is a professional singer in the Vocális Chamber Choir and Harmonia Chamber Singers, both based in Buffalo, and is the director of the Walden School Creative Musicians Retreat, a week-long festival for composers and improvisers held in New Hampshire each June. She was a long-time faculty member of The Walden School Young Musicians Program, where she also served as Academic Dean. Mallonee holds a Ph.D. from Duke University, a Master’s degree from the Yale School of Music, and a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University. A Fulbright award recipient, she spent a year in The Netherlands studying with Dutch composer Louis Andriessen and has also studied with Mario Davidovsky, Joseph Schwantner, Stephen Jaffe, Scott Lindroth, Evan Ziporyn, and Pamela Layman Quist.
