Burton Goldstein earned a Ph.D. from UCLA, where he studied composition with Henri Lazarof. Later he won fellowships at the Ernest Bloch Festival in Oregon under Chinary Ung, the Aspen Institute for Advanced Compositional Studies, under Jacob Druckman and Bernard Rands and at the Schoenberg Institute under Leonard Stein, sponsored by the NEH. Counted among his numerous awards: Vox Novus (NYC) selected three works in its 2014 “Fifteen Minutes of Fame” series; International Music Prize in Composition 2011 awarded by the National Academy of Music in Colorado; Borromeo String Quartet Prize; Brandenburg Chamber Music Prize in Composition; Aaron Copland Award; Lee Ettelson Award from Composers Inc.; a commission sponsored by the S. Mark Taper Foundation; American Music Center Grant, BMI Award in Composition; and a Henri Mancini Scholarship for Motion Picture and Television Composition.

He has served as president of the Independent Composers Association, been published in Perspectives of New Music and Electronic Musician and has been the technical editor for several Prentice Hall computer books.
