Gordon King retired as Organist/Choirmaster & Choristers Director from St. John’s in the Village, New York City, in 2021. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Texas where he majored in music with a concentration in organ and choral studies. During graduate work he was a teaching assistant in music literature. Two years after graduation he became music director at All Saints Episcopal Cathedral in Fort Worth where he directed three choirs and, for part of that time, taught music in the parish day school. He also founded the Diocesan Choir which gave annual concerts of major choral works with orchestral accompaniment. For two years he was Dean of the American Guild of Organists chapter in Fort Worth. Prior to that he taught music in the public schools of Midland, Texas.

From 1992 to 2004 he was organist and director of choirs for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chatham, New Jersey, where he directed adults and children. In addition to Sunday services, the adult choir performed major choral works with orchestra by Haydn, Mozart and Vivaldi. An annual organ recital was given at the church during the Lenten season. A composer of organ and choral music, his compositions have been published by Warner Brothers, Mark Foster, Concordia, Choristers Guild, and GIA publishing companies.

The King Chorale, a professional ensemble, produced a recording of American choral music on the Orion label which was favorably reviewed by several publications. Mr. King taught at Kean University in 1996. In his position at St. Paul’s, he founded and directed a Youth Choir of children ages six through fourteen. He also directed children’s choirs and youth choirs from ages six through high school. He was assistant director of the Fort Worth Youth choir for two years. This was an auditioned choir of outstanding high school singers from the area and was sponsored by Texas Christian University.

He has two sons, Patrick and Michael.
